Winter x games, x games, winter x games schedule, winter x games 2008, winter x games 12, winter xYou’ve known it was coming, but tonight is finally the night in which you can kick back, relax and enjoy hours upon hours of your favorite extreme winter sports in glorious high-definition. In a move made far too late (but we’re thankful nonetheless), ESPN has finally decided to cover this year’s events from Aspen, Colorado in HD, marking the first time in Winter X history in which the entire four-day event will be broadcast in 720p across the ESPN family of networks. Ready to cancel a few plans and check out Sal Masekela (among other things) in HD? Hit the read link for the full schedule — the first snowflake flies tonight at 9:00PM EST on ESPN HD.

Starting today, Jan. 24, the X Games 12 take over Aspen. Through Jan. 27, be prepared to watch some serious shredding on the slopes. Not only do boarders trick out on the half pipe, but men and women attack the half pipe on skis, too. There will be big air, 1080s in the men’s half pipe (that’s three turns in one jump), and slopestyle on skis (crazy tricks on skis on a good old-fashioned ski slope).

Keep an eye out for Gretchen Bleiler. She is a 26-year-old boarder who took the silver in the ‘06 Olympics and has a couple of gold medals from previous X Games too. Not only was she the first woman to land the move known as The Crippler, but she also designs her own line of outerwear, which will be available in the Fall of 2008.

Here’s the broadcast schedule for ESPN so you can program your DVR as to not miss a marvel.

62.jpgASPEN, Colo. Jan. 24, 2008 - As temperatures drop, the excitement heats up in Aspen, which is hosting the Winter X Games for the seventh consecutive year. Most of the action will take place over the next four days - and the invited rider list reads like a who’s who of winter sports. This year’s Games should prove to be a showcase for the progress female action sports athletes have made in the genre.

Highlights of WX12 will include snowboarder Torah Bright and freeskier Sarah Burke who are both returning to Aspen  in a bid to reclaim gold. You’ll also see a lot of halfpipe queen Gretchen Bleiler, Winter X gold medal winner in 2003 and 2005 and a silver medalist on the 2006 Olympic pipe.

In boardercross, 22-year-old Lindsey Jacobellis is considered royalty with three Winter X boardercross gold medals, two World Championship titles and an Olympic silver medal in her trophy case.

Last year, Jamie Anderson became the youngest X Game gold winner when she won the women’s snowboard slopestyle, while older sister Joanie took first place in snocross so keep an eye on the Anderson girls once again.

Also not to be overlooked is Kelly Clark, 24, who is competing in her eighth Winter X Games. She’s earned four medals - two gold, two silver - all in the superpipe. Her last gold finish was in 2006.

As one of the most x-treme winter sports events in the world, Winter X attracts an international array of gravity-defying athletes. Money (record purses this year), medals and worldwide fame are all up for grabs as athletes compete in skiing, snowboard and snocross so catch all the action today through Sunday.

Helio Castroneves, ‘Dancing With the Stars’

Helio Castroneves may have come away with the “Dancing With the Stars” mirror ball trophy last night, but he won’t be racing to the altar anytime soon.

The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and his fiancee, Aliette Vazquez, have split, reports People.

“I can confirm that Aliette Vazquez and I have called off our engagement and are no longer together,” says Castroneves. “At this time I would prefer to keep my private life private.”

The couple had pushed back their engagement earlier in the fall TV season because of the demands of his career and his participation on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Earlier, he had told “Entertainment Tonight,” “We postponed it for a little bit until next year … Everything is happening so quick. The [IndyCar Series] championship is over, the dancing started, and basically, I was like, ‘Ali, let’s take it easy. Otherwise, we will be divorced before we get married.’”

Castroneves, 32, paired up with pro dancer Julianne Hough on the latest “Dancing With the Stars” and won the coveted trophy against Spice Girl Melanie Brown. Coincidentally, Hough had also postponed her wedding to her ex-fiancee, dancer Zach Wilson, the previous season because of the show’s scheduling demands.

3.jpgSee what happens, Friday Night Lights, when you forget about the Incident and you let the stories of your characters and their regular lives take center stage? You get maybe the best episode of the season, is what you get.

(Spoilers coming — and sorry, but I’m not cutting 500 words from this recap.)

More than any other episode this season, “Pantherama” felt like it was in the FNL wheelhouse — even though there was no game and we spent all of maybe two minutes on the field. It did, however, delve into family issues, deeply felt emotions and a fine, healthy dose of humor. Pretty much the whole episode sang.

Even the part I felt kind of queasy about — Matt’s relationship with nurse Carlotta — came off better than I expected. Carlotta clearly likes Matt, but I can’t really see any evidence that she like-likes him. It’s just that Matt is, you know, a 17-year-old kid and therefore not so good at reading those signals. (There’s also the question of why he’d even want to go there, as things seem to be going fairly well with New Girlfriend. But, then again, he’s a 17-year-old kid.)

Smash, and the always wonderful Liz Mikel as Mrs. Smash, were at the center of one story. It’s recruiting time in Texas, and the hucksters are all over Smash, much to his delight and his mom’s dismay. He casually dismisses an emissary from a historically black college, explaining that he’ll be in the NFL before his four years are up, and is rapt at the stories told by a former Panther’s little sister (it doesn’t hurt that she’s, you know, hot) about how her brother now drives a Porsche and is the king of fake school Miami Southern.

Smash may be full of himself and not giving an ounce of thought to life beyond football, but you can at least see where he’s coming from: He probably does stand a better chance of being drafted if he goes to a powerhouse school, and he doesn’t have time for anyone telling him he needs a Plan B (even though that’s the sensible thing to do).

Once he gets wind of what’s going on, though, Coach Taylor is having none of it, shaming the Miami Southern recruiter away from the table at a restaurant and sitting down for a vintage Coach Taylor speech about his dad being on him with “every damn decision” he ever made. “I’m here. I just wanted to remind you of that,” he tells his star player. “You got money? … Good, you can buy your own meal.”

Coach was also involved, albeit tangentially, in the other main story, that of Julie starting to fall for her new journalism teacher, John from Cincinnati Noah Barnett. He has an iPod, he challenges Julie on her story he lets her call him “Noah” — “Mom. That’s his name,” Julie informs a curious Tami — and Julie, still hurting from her breakup with Matt (and seeing how he’s moved on), is smitten but good.

Tami is already seeing a couple of red flags — having already mistaken Noah for a student and seeing the way her daughter looks at him — while Eric is more concerned with a story Julie writes about Pantherama, the athletic department (which is to say, football) fund-raiser, in which he “refuses to comment.” Cue one of the funniest lines of the night: “She asked me through the bathroom door, what was I supposed to do?” he fumes. “I was busy.”

2.jpgSpeaking of funny: Pretty much everything involving Tyra tonight was gold. Maybe Landry taking the Incident on his shoulders has lifted a weight off her shoulders, but Tyra was back to being the sassy smartass she was much of last season, teasing the football team into performing at Pantherama and, along with Lyla, choreographing a semi-striptease that had Tami’s jaw on the floor for a good minute of screen time (and every single cut to her was fantastic). That’s what Mrs. Coach gets, though, for roping two girls who’d rather not have anything to do with the Panthers into running the entertainment portion of the show.

Much more good stuff from Friday’s episode, including:

Tami’s resistance and eventual acceptance that Buddy, however mercenary his ulterior motives might be, probably gives Santiago a better chance at success than working through the social-services system. Loved the look that passed across Buddy’s face as he started to realize the responsibility he’s just taken on. The moment where Santiago admitted the bunk in Buddy’s spare room was his first real bed was incredibly touching.
Riggins bunking at Tyra’s house, which was just as funny as it should have been. Tim splits his house after seeing Jackie (Brooke Langton, moonlighting from Life) with Billy one too many times and winds up on his ex-girlfriend’s doorstep, where Tyra is ever so displeased to see him (”What’s all this?” she asks. “My clothes,” Tim tells her. “That’s nice. What are they all doing here?”). It ends on a bit of a sad note, though, as Tim checks out of the Collette household and into some ferret-keeping loser’s apartment at the close of the episode. Somehow I don’t think that’s gonna last too long.
The following lines: Tami to Lyla: “Oh honey, you are not using Jesus Christ our Lord as an excuse not to help your counselor, are you?” Eric to Tami, as they argue about Santiago: “Don’t whisper-yell at me.” Tyra’s sister, talking about another dancer stealing her “signature song”: “I will kick her ass in boots and chaps and a thong. What was she thinking?” To which Riggins replies, “I don’t know. But that’s a good costume.”
The show looks like it will come back around to the Incident soon enough — the episode scheduled for Dec. 7 is called “The Confession,” after all (at least according to the NBC press site; the teaser for the next episode made it look like the network might go out of order). We’ll deal with that when it comes; I go into this weekend more than happy with what transpired this week.

Republican debate

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

First up were the Democrats, and now it’s the Republicans’ turn. Tonight marks the much-anticipated CNN/YouTube Republican Debate, in which the 8 GOP candidates on our You Choose ‘08 platform will descend on St. Petersburg, Florida to answer video questions submitted via YouTube. The two-hour debate will be aired live on CNN at 8 PM ET, and all the clips will be hosted soon after on YouTube.

People submitted almost 5,000 questions (4,927, to be exact) to the GOP hopefuls right on YouTube — 2,000 more than the Democrats got on July 23. In true YouTube style, some of the questions are creative, but most are compelling — and demonstrate the concerns of voters trying to differentiate between the candidates in a crowded primary field.

Back in July, we broke new ground in presidential debates with our first-ever CNN/YouTube Debate. Thirty-nine questions were posed to the Democratic candidates, and when Stephen Sixta asked a question about whether or not the presidential contenders would speak directly to foreign dictators, a conflict broke out between Senators Obama and Clinton that has matured into the defining difference between these two front-runners in this campaign.

The core concept behind these debates is to let real questions from real people drive the dialogue. The power of YouTube is that it lowers the barrier to entry to engage in the political process, and levels the platform for political discussion. It used to be that a voter had to live in Iowa, New Hampshire, or Florida to engage with the candidates at this stage of the campaign, but YouTube has broken down those barriers, and has brought more transparency and access to the political dialogue than ever before. We think that politics will never be the same (thankfully).

Log cabin republicans

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

In one of Mitt Romney’s early TV spots, an announcer described how, “In one of the most liberal states in the country, one Republican stood up” for various conservative issues, such as “traditional marriage and the sanctity of human life.” Not so fast, say the Log Cabin Republicans, the major gay Republican group. It has put out a new ad today featuring a very liberal sounding Mitt Romney. The spot comes off as pro-Romney, boasting of his “Massachusetts values,’’ which is a fairly brutal thing to say considering that the Log Cabin Republicans plan to run the spot not only locally in Iowa for two weeks, but also on Fox News (!!).

To be fair, most Mr. Romney’s quotes – “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country,’’ and, “I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years that we should sustain and support it” – come from his 1994 Senate race. And Kevin Madden, a Romney spokesman, has responded with a list of various conservative moves and statements by Mr. Romney, though most of those are from within the last two or three years.
Even so, a fight with a gay group may not be such a bad thing for Mr. Romney. Even those conservatives who will buy into the flip-flop claim may take heart that he has “flip flopped’’ to their way of seeing things.
The group, which says it wants to put out the “truth about Romney,’’ says it will run the spot for a couple of weeks but for now, depending on what Mr. Romney says and does after that, does not necessarily see it as a sustained campaign.
See the ad for yourself (Script and Romney push back are below):
TV Ad Script, notated and provided by Log Cabin Republicans:
Narrator: For years he’s fought conservatives and religious extremists, Mitt Romney.
Romney: I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years that we should sustain and support it. (Massachusetts Senate Debate, October 25, 1994, Boston, Faneuil Hall.
Narrator: Mitt Romney opposed the gun lobby.
Even Ronald Reagan.
Romney: I was independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush. (Massachusetts Senate Debate, October 25, 1994, Boston, Faneuil Hall.)
Narrator: a record fighting the religious right a pro-choice record Massachusetts valuesMitt Romney.
And the Romney push-back (or enough of it for you to get the idea):
FACT: In Massachusetts, Governor Romney Repeatedly Sided With Life:
Governor Mitt Romney Is Pro-Life And Believes “Abortion Is The Wrong Choice.” (Governor Mitt Romney, Op-Ed, “Why I Vetoed The Contraception Bill,” The Boston Globe, 7/26/05)
Governor Romney Vetoed Legislation That Would Have Provided For The “Morning After Pill” Without A Prescription. (Governor Mitt Romney, Op-Ed, “Why I Vetoed The Contraception Bill,” The Boston Globe, 7/26/05)
FACT: In Massachusetts, Governor Romney Repeatedly Sided With Gun Owners And Sportsmen Over Burdensome Bureaucratic Regulation:
In July 2006, Governor Romney Signed Legislation Reversing Burdensome Regulations For The Makers Of Customized Target Pistols. (Office Of Governor Mitt Romney, “Governor Romney Approves Exemption For Target Pistols,” Press Release, 7/26/06)
In July 2004, Governor Romney Signed Legislation Supported By Gun Owners That Reformed The State’s Onerous Gun Laws. “The bill enjoyed the support of Massachusetts gun owners because it also encompassed several measures they favored including a lengthening of the terms of firearm identification cards and licenses to carry.” (Scott Helman, “Romney Retreats On Gun Control,” The Boston Globe, 1/14/07)
FACT: Governor Romney Is The Only Major Republican Candidate Supporting A Federal Marriage Amendment:
Governor Romney Is The Only Major Republican Candidate Supporting The Federal Marriage Amendment. MSNBC’s JOE SCARBOROUGH: “Any other major Republican candidates support the marriage amendment?” GOVERNOR ROMNEY: “You know, I don’t think that Rudy or Fred or John McCain support the marriage amendment and I think they’re in error on that one.” (MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” www.youtube.com, 9/14/07)
FACT: Governor Romney Believes Our Party Must Return To The Principles Of Ronald Reagan:
Governor Romney: “Now, I wasn’t always a Ronald Reagan conservative. Neither was Ronald Reagan, by the way. And perhaps some in this room have had the opportunity to listen, learn, and benefit from life’s experience and to grow in wisdom, as I have. My life experience convinced me that Ronald Reagan was right. I’m a conservative that gets the job done. And you don’t just have to take my word for it, you can just look at my record.” (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks At Awakenings 2007, Sea Island, GA, 1/607)
Update: More From Kevin Madden:
“As Governor Romney has repeatedly made clear, like many other Republicans including Ronald Reagan, he wasn’t always pro-life. Governor Romney has said he was wrong and hopes he never stops learning from his mistakes or trying to do what’s right.
“This personal, negative attack was launched and paid for by a group recognized as having Mayor Giuliani as their ‘favorite’ candidate. Governor Romney supports a federal marriage amendment and so it makes sense that a national gay rights group would attack him. The advertisement misrepresents Governor Romney’s courage to admit that he had been wrong on this issue and the fact that he is proud of his strong record of defending the sanctity of life.”

Emily Sander had a very rarely used Myspace Page which featured a Picture of her and her boyfriend of the time Mike.  Zoey Zane may have presented some issues with her meeting normal people on myspace, but still interesting that she had one, with Tom as her only friend.  A YouTube Video montage of her non-nude Pics is also available.
