Packers vs cowboys

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

What a big game tonight?! The second huge matchup of the year after the Patriots/Colts game a few weeks ago. Neither of these teams is undefeated, but they both are 10-1 and have distinguished themselves as the two best teams in the NFC. Recall before the season started that I predicted the Cowboys would make it to the Superbowl and most thought I was crazy, but it looking like a decent prediction now.

So for tonight’s game who do I like: my heart says Green Bay, but my head says Dallas. So…I’ll take Dallas for several reasons. I really like their two headed attack at running back with Julius Jones and Marion Barber - both of which are very hard runners…Barber punishes tacklers. I also think the loss of Charles Woodson is going to really hurt the Packers tonight with Al harris being occupied with TO for the entire game. This will leave the oft-burned Jared Bush to cover some others which is a tall order. Ironically, had Jared Bush blocked the Detroit Lion last week on that punt return Woodson would have not only scored a TD, but also not have been injured.

I also think the running game for the Packers will not stand up to the Cowboys defensive line this week. I think they are too big for the Packer line to handle. In the end Favre will have to start getting risky which will lead to possible turnovers.

Staying in this game will be important for the Pack and a start like they had on Thanksgiving day would be diaster for them. I do think they have a chance if they stay in the game and can run the ball a small amount…if they can rush for 100 yards on the day they can stay in the game.  All that being said I like the Cowboys by 13 in a high scoring game:  37-24.

Update [2007-11-29 10:3:57 by Skin Patrol]: I forgot to include this one that was found, I believe, by Extreme Skins yesterday. It is an article at the Miami Herald where actor Andy Garcia (IMDB) praises the actions of Sean Taylor in saving his girlfriend, Jackie Garcia, who happens to be the actor’s neice:

Actor Andy Garcia hailed his niece’s slain boyfriend, NFL star Sean Taylor, as a ”free safety until the end” who showed bravery in the last moments of his life to protect his family…”His heroic action on that tragic night saved their life and is a testament to his humanity and courage,” Garcia said in his statement, which was provided to The Miami Herald through his manager, Joanne Colonna. “His spirit will live forever, in our hearts and through the legacy of his achievements and the family he leaves behind.”…

”Sean was known to many as an extraordinary athlete and unquestionable teammate,” Garcia said. “To those of us who had the good fortune to count him as a member of our extended family, we will always remember him as a caring and loving individual especially to his new family, his precious daughter Jackie and to the love of his life and mother to his child my niece Jacqueline.”

Three posts I felt needed linking on my way out the door. First, from ESPN via Fanhouse, there’s an article from Taylor’s childhood friend Antrel Rolle:

Rolle said he and Taylor became friends as 6-year-old teammates for the Homestead Hurricanes. Later, when they played against each other, Rolle was a running back and Taylor a linebacker.”They’d call a sweep one way,” Rolle said. “I would look at him on that side, and I would change the play myself and go the other way because I knew he would try to knock my head off.”

Wise man, that Antrel Rolle, changing the play away from Sean. Also, as one of the few people who was close to Taylor for so long, he’s uniquely qualified to talk about the kind of life Sean Taylor lived. The article has Rolle’s own theory on the murder, which deserves mention:

…he did not believe the killing was part of a burglary gone sour, and that Taylor had many enemies on the streets of Miami.”This was not the first incident,” Rolle said. “They’ve been targeting him for three years now.”

Rolle said many former “friends” had it in for Taylor, who was trying to build a more stable life.

I commented over at the Curly R in a very interesting post by Ben that contrasted early reporting of the incident with later news. I highlight it here as it just goes to show how difficult facts are to come by in a chaotic incident such as Taylor’s murder, as distinct and often times contradictory information came out after the fact on seemingly obvious issues. I imagine it’s going to be much of the same looking towards the future, since a murder investigation (and I wouldn’t know anything about that, so take this for what it is(n’t) worth) might provide it’s own unique difficulties in the control and dissemination of info. As Ben said in an earlier post:

Unless the cops are going straight out of the academy playbook and running a misdirection this seems odd. Perhaps they have significant evidence, maybe not, but either way I suppose by announcing this was a random act they believe perhaps the suspects will not flee or will get careless.

Just something to keep in mind; everything we know will likely be known to the people responsible, and the police have to release information under the competing pressures of keeping the public informed without compromising their investigation. That would be difficult. Finally, I remember Sean Taylor’s big hit on Brian Moorman in the Pro Bowl fondly. Not because I hate Brian Moorman (I actually love the guy, moreso now, as you’ll see) but because it personified the kind of player Taylor was. Just because the Pro Bowl is a pretend football game doesn’t mean he’s going to turn it off for a second, and the “OOOOOOOH!” of the crowd immediately after told me that they were happy he didn’t. At the time, I was incredibly impressed by Moorman jumping up after the fact and congratulating Taylor mid-field. Dude continues to impress me, per The Bog:

The Planner on Nov 8th 2007

For those of you interested in something different than the SALT Gallery artwork or the usual things you see in your hometown gallery, SALT has recently been asked to find buyers for a collection of original Peter Max paintings and one piece by Romanian Alexandra Nechita. The artwork can be seen here.

Peter Max’s vivid colors and design-sense speak for themselves. Nechita is widely popular to collectors and her paintings have kept their value through her already prolific career- this girl had her first show at eight, started drawing before she could speak, and has already visited and perfected several genres.

If you or someone you know would have an interest in hearing more about the artwork (price, etc.), send a note to director@salt-gallery.com

In the meantime, remember: all will be well.

Midwest Teen Sex Show

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

“The Midwest Teen Sex Show,” whose self-declared mission is Sex Ed 101, aims to discuss the pros and cons of teen sexuality and is intended and targeted toward teens, not adults.

The podcasts have sparked mixed reactions from parents.

“I would like for them to keep themselves pure and wholesome and abstain from sex and not look like a geek,” said Plano mother Rhonda Cochran.

Jennifer Kauffman, of Dallas, found only one episode appropriate for her 11-year-old son, Mitchell, — the one dealing with abstinence. Still, some of the dialogue was over his head, she said.

“I think they are appropriate for older kids. I think it’s going to take some explaining for younger kids if they do get their hands on it,” said Kauffman’s mother Jennifer.

But, doctor Richard Honaker, a family practice physician said the show isn’t blunt enough.

“I think it’s real. You gotta hit them over the head. Parents are naive about what their young people know and they’re naive about what their young people are willing to participate in,” said Honaker.

Hokaker said children 13 and older should absolutely see the skits.

“I think it needs to be more blunt and say, ‘Here is a picture of venereal warts. do you want these warts?’,” Honaker said.

In an e-Mail to NBC 5, one of the creators of the show defended the podcasts: “I know some teens who are not ready for this type of content, but I know many more who see a lot worse than ‘Midwest Teen Sex Show’ on a regular basis.”

Children under the age of 18 are required to get permission from a parent to listen to the show, and as always, parents can decide for themselves if they show is something that is appropriate for their child. But the show is leaving no doubt that the podcasts are attention grabbing no matter the verdict.

    Jason whitlock

    Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star has written quite a few keepers, but I believe this one tops the list. An incredibly powerful piece of writing by one of the best in the business.

There’s a reason I call them the Black KKK. The pain, the fear and the destruction are all the same.

Someone who loved Sean Taylor is crying right now. The life they knew has been destroyed, an 18-month-old baby lost her father, and, if you’re a black man living in America, you’ve been reminded once again that your life is in constant jeopardy of violent death.

The Black KKK claimed another victim, a high-profile professional football player with a checkered past this time.

No, we don’t know for certain the circumstances surrounding Taylor’s death. I could very well be proven wrong for engaging in this sort of aggressive speculation. But it’s no different than if you saw a fat man fall to the ground clutching his chest. You’d assume a heart attack, and you’d know, no matter the cause, the man needed to lose weight.

Well, when shots are fired and a black man hits the pavement, there’s every statistical reason to believe another black man pulled the trigger. That’s not some negative, unfair stereotype. It’s a reality we’ve been living with, tolerating and rationalizing for far too long.

When the traditional, white KKK lynched, terrorized and intimidated black folks at a slower rate than its modern-day dark-skinned replacement, at least we had the good sense to be outraged and in no mood to contemplate rationalizations or be fooled by distractions.

Our new millennium strategy is to pray the Black KKK goes away or ignores us. How’s that working?

About as well as the attempt to shift attention away from this uniquely African-American crisis by focusing on an alleged injustice the white media allegedly perpetrated against Sean Taylor.

Within hours of his death, there was a story circulating that members of the black press were complaining that news outlets were disrespecting Taylor’s victimhood by reporting on his troubled past

No disrespect to Taylor, but he controlled the way he would be remembered by the way he lived. His immature, undisciplined behavior with his employer, his run-ins with law enforcement, which included allegedly threatening a man with a loaded gun, and the fact a vehicle he owned was once sprayed with bullets are all pertinent details when you’ve been murdered.

Marcellus Wiley, a former NFL player, made the radio circuit Wednesday, singing the tune that athletes are targets. That was his explanation for the murders of Taylor and Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams and the armed robberies of NBA players Antoine Walker and Eddy Curry.

    Really?

Let’s cut through the bull(manure) and deal with reality. Black men are targets of black men. Period. Go check the coroner’s office and talk with a police detective. These bullets aren’t checking W-2s.

Rather than whine about white folks’ insensitivity or reserve a special place of sorrow for rich athletes, we’d be better served mustering the kind of outrage and courage it took in the 1950s and 1960s to stop the white KKK from hanging black men from trees.

But we don’t want to deal with ourselves. We take great joy in prescribing medicine to cure the hate in other people’s hearts. Meanwhile, our self-hatred, on full display for the world to see, remains untreated, undiagnosed and unrepentant.

Our self-hatred has been set to music and reinforced by a pervasive culture that promotes a crab-in-barrel mentality.

You’re damn straight I blame hip hop for playing a role in the genocide of American black men. When your leading causes of death and dysfunction are murder, ignorance and incarceration, there’s no reason to give a free pass to a culture that celebrates murder, ignorance and incarceration.

Of course there are other catalysts, but until we recapture the minds of black youth, convince them that it’s not OK to “super man dat ho” and end any and every dispute by “cocking on your bitch,” nothing will change.

Does a Soulja Boy want an education?

HBO did a fascinating documentary on Little Rock Central High School, the Arkansas school that required the National Guard so that nine black kids could attend in the 1950s. Fifty years later, the school is one of the nation’s best in terms of funding and educational opportunities. It’s 60 percent black and located in a poor black community.

Watch the documentary and ask yourself why nine poor kids in the ’50s risked their lives to get a good education and a thousand poor black kids today ignore the opportunity that is served to them on a platter.

Blame drugs, blame Ronald Reagan, blame George Bush, blame it on the rain or whatever. There’s only one group of people who can change the rotten, anti-education, pro-violence culture our kids have adopted. We have to do it.

According to reports, Sean Taylor had difficulty breaking free from the unsavory characters he associated with during his youth.

The “keepin’ it real” mantra of hip hop is in direct defiance to evolution. There’s always someone ready to tell you you’re selling out if you move away from the immature and dangerous activities you used to do, you’re selling out if you speak proper English, embrace education, dress like a grown man, do anything mainstream.

The Black KKK is enforcing the same crippling standards as its parent organization. It wants to keep black men in their place — uneducated, outside the mainstream and six feet deep.

In all likelihood, the Black Klan and its mentality buried Sean Taylor, and any black man or boy reading this could be next.

An after-hours phone message left with Fuller was not immediately returned.

Hewitt also starred in the television series “Party of Five” and “Time of Your Life.” Her film credits include “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “The Tuxedo” and “Garfield.”
